Words From Our Flooring Company's Owner, Notes on My Father Who Started This Business

Sitting at the dinner table usually ended with a great meal, but dad always had something to say about that day’s wood floor job. He would be excited to let us know he was either working on a sand and finish or install job or repairs. I didn’t get it all at times but learned the lingo early on.

I was very young but would remember him coming home so tired but happy. I really believe he enjoyed his labor-intensive work. His knees hurt and he always woke up a little bent over. But at the end of the day, he was always so delighted to see how much his clients loved the final product.

He was well-known in the Houston area and people would ask for him by name when he worked at another wood floor company. Clients would let his boss know how kind and committed he was. He finally decided to go into business for himself in 1977. He had been in the wood floor business for most of his life, sanding bowling alleys and dance halls in his younger years. So he decided to provide residential wood floor service.

He was always so appreciated by his clients. They loved the personal attention he would give to his work along with a commitment to completing projects and always worked hard to deliver it! They would even call the office just to let him know that they were 100% satisfied with his work. I know this because my mother and I use to answer the business line when he was away from his home office. I was so proud of him.

Unfortunately, my father took ill and passed away in March of 1986.I will say that things are never the same when your father is no longer with you to lead, guide, protect, and love you. Cherish yours!

I had never thought of stepping in until a dear uncle of mine, Joe Villareal, would come by where I worked and take me out to lunch. Little did I know that he wanted to get me to go on a few estimates to see if I could measure a floor and give an estimate on the spot. When he saw I could do that with ease…get this…he said you are on your own. It was a challenge but my uncle Joe would always tell me that he knew my dad would be so proud that his daughter would even consider trying to continue something that he started even though it wouldn’t be easy.

So here I am, over 30 years later, still measuring and giving estimates for residential homeowners here in Houston. It has been a pleasure, as Houstonians are great people!
